Delaware County, known colloquially as "Delco", was created from part of Chester County in 1789 (one of the three original counties of Pennsylvania created by William Penn in 1682). It was named for the Delaware River and its county seat has been Media since 1851. Prior to 1851 Chester City was the county seat of both Delaware County and, before that, of Chester County in the Delaware Valley area. Delaware County and the history-rich Brandywine countryside have thousands of visitors touring battlefields, rivers and nationally renowned museums and gardens. Located just southwest of the city of Philadelphia, Delaware County is Pennsylvania's fifth most populous county (as of the 2000 census). It is comprised of 49 unique municipalities and 16 census designated places. The county is home to 11 colleges and universities including Villanova University, Haverford College and Swarthmore College. Prior to his recent death, reknown artist, Andrew Wyeth lived in Chadds Ford. Many people, mistakenly believe that Chadds Ford is located in Chester County. Actually, it's location is within Delaware County. The painting above is one of our Wyeth favorites...called Christinas World.
